What types of equipment and techniques are commonly used in the heat soaked railing glass soaking process?
The heat soaking process for heat soaked railing glass is a technique used to eliminate the risk of spontaneous glass breakage due to nickel sulfide (NiS) inclusions. To carry out this process, several types of equipment and techniques are commonly employed. The following are the primary ones:
Heat Soaking Oven: The heat soaking oven is the main equipment used for the process. It is a specially designed chamber that can withstand high temperatures. The oven is equipped with heating elements, temperature controllers, and fans to ensure the uniform distribution of heat. The size of the oven depends on the quantity and dimensions of the glass panels to be heat soaked.
Temperature Controllers: Heat soaking ovens require precise temperature control to achieve the desired results. Temperature controllers monitor and regulate the temperature within the oven. They ensure that the glass is subjected to an elevated temperature for an extended period.
Thermocouples: Thermocouples are temperature sensors that are placed inside the oven to measure and monitor the temperature accurately. They provide real-time temperature data, allowing operators to make adjustments when necessary.
Glass Racks and Shelves: Glass panels that undergo the heat soaking process are typically placed on glass racks or shelves within the oven. These racks and shelves are designed to withstand high temperatures and hold the glass securely in position to prevent any damages during the process.
Safety Measures: Heat soaking of glass involves the possibility of glass breakage, so safety measures are crucial. Safety screens or barriers are set up around the oven to protect operators from flying glass shards in case of breakage. Protective clothing, including gloves, goggles, and heat-resistant suits, is worn by the workers to ensure their safety during the process.
Ventilation System: Heat soaking ovens generate a significant amount of heat and may release harmful fumes. A ventilation system is employed to remove heat and fumes from the oven, maintaining a safe working environment for operators.
The heat soaking process typically follows a specific technique, which involves preheating the glass panels to a specific temperature for a predetermined duration. The temperature is usually maintained between 290-320°C (550-610°F) for somewhere around 2-8 hours. This prolonged exposure to heat helps identify glasses with NiS inclusions which might cause spontaneous breakage over time. The goal is to allow such inclusions to expand and break within the oven, reducing the risk of breakage after installation.
